Community Development Specialist

Retail Strategies is seeking a professional with technical experience in revitalizing and rejuvenating downtowns for its Downtown Strategies division. The candidate should have knowledge of city policy such as zoning and codes; an understanding of tourism development within a community; an appreciation for art, architecture, and historic preservation in a community space; and hands-on experience working with locally owned businesses that make up a community business ecosystem.

The successful candidate should have excellent writing skills and the ability to read complex documents and summarize into white papers and briefs; thrive in public environments while participating in and facilitating community meetings; and have the ability to travel at least 7 days per month. Applicants should be deadline-driven team players with outstanding multi-tasking abilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Participating in and hosting and facilitating community workshops for downtown revitalization clients
  • Identifying strategic needs of a community and creating a strategic plan with Downtown Strategies team
  • Writing original content and curating existing content for clients and product promotion
  • Interfacing with prospective clients and clients to discuss products and community work plans
  • Assisting existing clients with implementation of strategic recommendations for downtown revitalization
  • Maintaining thought leadership within specific downtown revitalization realms and writing and presenting content as needed
  • Collaborating with other members of the Downtown Strategies team, both in person and virtually to meet client needs
  • Maintaining a fast-paced work calendar of meetings, events and deadlines

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, public policy or related field
    2+ years downtown revitalization experience
  • Excellent writing skills
    Proficient with MS Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent knowledge of local government processes and policy
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong people skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to travel at least 7 days per month

Qualifications:

  • Experience in grant writing on state and/or federal level
  • Located in or willing to locate to Birmingham, AL
