Five Below coming to Jasper

Popular retailer Five Below is coming to Jasper.

“We’re excited about the future, and there’s a lot more coming to Jasper.”

Jeff Sommer, portfolio director for Retail Strategies

Retail strategies is a company that works with the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Jasper to help recruit new businesses, and they have helped recruit the majority of businesses in the Jasper Square Shopping Center, including Five Below.

Sommer said Five Below will provide Walker County residents with a new shopping experience, and the success of surrounding retailers in the Jasper Square Shopping Center was a factor of consideration when Five Below decided to expand their retail base in Jasper.

“It’s a fair deal. It’s a good deal. It’s new tax revenue coming in for the city,” Sommer said. “It’s a different brand offering what you would see in Hoover, Huntsville or Vestavia. It’s a good little splash in the retail world knowing that Five Below has chosen to come here.”

In an emailed statement to the Daily Mountain Eagle, Scott vonCannon, Chief Operations Officer for Retail Strategies, expressed his enthusiasm for the Five Below announcement.

“We’re thrilled of the upcoming opening of Five Below in Jasper. This retailer will complement a very successful shopping center in a thriving retail landscape within Walker County,” he said. “Due to the longstanding partnership and guidance of the Walker County Chamber of Commerce, we have been able to maintain continuous success in this market for over six years. Mayor David O’Mary and the city council has also been able to create an environment that allows a business to prosper, especially in times of challenging national retail conditions. We anticipate the grand opening and this successful business venture in Jasper.”

How are businesses recruited to Jasper?

Jasper Mayor David O’Mary and Chamber of Commerce of Walker County President Linda Lewis joined Retail Strategies team members and Project Developer Carter Cooper of Richmond Properties for a conversation with the Daily Mountain Eagle about how businesses are recruited locally.

The first thing Jeff Sommer, portfolio director for Retail Strategies, emphasized was, “It takes years to get people to finish a deal.”

Retail Strategies has been working with the City of Jasper and the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County for the past six years to serve as a bridge between locals and national companies, and Retail Strategies has secured a number of businesses in Jasper.

By working with Cooper, they secured the majority of retailers in the Jasper Square Shopping Center and other businesses along Highway 78, including the recently announced Applebee’s restaurant.

My relationship with the Retail Strategies team has been extremely valuable over the last couple of years as I’ve searched for sites in the Southeast. They have been persistent and provided any information they could gather for available properties that fit my criteria. If they received news that a space was coming available they made sure to immediately give me a call and connect with the owners. I would recommend using this service to any of my colleagues looking in their client cities.
