FOCUS TRENDS :: SPORTING GOODS
The sporting goods sector has had a tough year with Sports Authority, Golfsmith, and others declaring bankruptcy. All the while, the merger between Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s has yet to finalize.
Sporting goods stores share the same challenges facing retail in general. Online sales are cutting into their bottom line, discount and high-end stores have an edge, and experience is paramount to shoppers.
However, there is still growth in the sector. The major players that are Dick’s and Academy have continued to open new locations. Dunham’s has positioned itself as a large-box sporting goods store that will take existing spaces. Hibbett Sports has continued to locate in markets not reached by the larger stores. The high-end, experience-oriented stores such as Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shop, and REI have conservative growth plans with reliance on public incentives, but could be well positioned for latest retail trends.
The trends impacting retail have affected the sporting goods sector in kind. The next few years should shake out which company can adapt and succeed moving forward.
