Focus Trends ~ Wholesale Clubs
Expansion & Closures
The wholesale club sector is dominated by three major retailers: Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s Wholesale Club. These stores offer discount prices in bulk in a warehouse format for its members. The membership aspect is what differs this sector from most others. Membership at Costco costs $60 per year, at Sam’s Club $45 per year, at BJ’s $50 per year.
Costco and Sam’s Club have over 500 locations across the United States, whereas BJ’s Wholesale Club only has around 200 locations on the east coast. Costco and Sam’s Club have had strong sales figures the past few years with moderate growth.
The owners of BJ’s Wholesale might be positioning to sell the retailer. Walmart and Amazon have both been rumored to have interest.
