“We are extremely impressed with the group,” said Billy Nowell, mayor of Cleveland. “They are extremely good at what they are doing.” Nowell, Cleveland’s mayor who is also a Realtor, said the Retail Strategies team is able to talk to different groups and businesses and “a lot of times you are even lucky to get these people to look in your town.”
For at least two other Mississippi cities, Retail Strategies has been successful thus far. Buddy Sanders, community development director for Starkville, said the city has landed Cricket Wireless, Academy Sports, Smoothie King, Bargain Hunt, WalMart Neighborhood Market and a Dairy Queen as a result of the firm’s efforts.
New Albany just renewed its three-year contract with Retail Strategies, and Mayor Tim Kent said the town’s sales tax collection exceeded what it paid the firm per year.
“We looked at the figures — the businesses that we brought in,” Kent said. “The sales tax we were gaining off of it was more than we paid for them.”
New Albany now has a Cracker Barrel, a Zaxby’s and a Popeyes, and the three restaurants combined added 185 jobs to the area, Kent said.
“They are easy to work with. Really and truly, anytime we have any kind of questions, they give us an answer,” Kent said. He said the businesses that Retail Strategies brought to the area have complemented other local businesses rather than compete with them.
