Challenge

Prior to our engagement a row of historic homes, one block off Main Street, was owned by the City and utilized for storage and museums. In the Strategic Plan, we recommended that the City sell these properties for commercial purposes. The homes are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Nine months after the plan was delivered, all homes were sold and activated. They now feature a children’s clothing/toy store, an art gallery, coffee and dessert shop, and a deli and event venue. These properties contribute to the City’s budget via sales tax revenue and create a secondary Main Street adding vitality and activity in the city’s core area.

“In recent years there has been a concerted effort to reclaim and stimulate revitalization in the City’s downtown area. What began as an effort to either ‘improve or remove’ a simple row of older homes and a broken-down railroad depot has resulted in a veritable success story featuring a welcoming, down home environment and thriving businesses for visitors and residents alike.”
